Goal setting template
Setting goals can help us feel good about changing our movement habits. Some people 昀椀nd it helpful to set SMART goals.
Description
S
Speci昀椀c – be clear about what you want to do
M
Measurable – how will you be able to tell you’ve made a di昀昀erence?
A
Achievable – will it be possible to meet this goal?
R
Realistic – is this goal something you will be able to do?
T
Timebound – give yourself a deadline or timeframe to work towards
Before you set your SMART goals, think about these factors:
-
What kind of movement do you enjoy doing?
What do you need to achieve your goals?
What physical activity do you do now?
What would you like to be able to do in 3 or 6 months’ time?
Do you want to work towards this on your own, or 昀椀nd a friend to work with?
Is there anything you 昀椀nd di昀케cult day to day that you’d like to work on? For example, walking places, balancing or
climbing stairs?
For example:
-
By the end of the month, I will be able to walk a lap of Lake Weeroona without stopping.
By the end of the month, I want to be able to lift an extra 2 kilograms when exercising my arms.
Since I already play basketball after work one day a week, by the end of the next fortnight, I want to 昀椀nd time for two
more basketball sessions in my schedule.
I will ride my bike to work 2 days a week (a 20-minute bike ride) for the next 2 months.
For the next three months, I will have a 20-minute lounge room dance party with my children once week.
For the next six months, I will either walk or run four times a week.
Don’t forget to celebrate your wins — big or small! As you improve over time, it’s a good idea to update your goals so
they keep challenging and motivating you.
